The John Newton Russell Legacy:
Outstanding Character, Dedication to the
Profession, Meritorious Service

Nominations for the 2026 John Newton Russell Memorial Award are now closed.

Congratulations to Robert M. Nelson, the 2026 recipient of the John Newton Russell Memorial Award. NAIFA will present Nelson with the award at the Belong Awards Luncheon during Protectors Powered by NAIFA on November 9, 2026, at the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

About the John Newton Russell Memorial Award

Established in 1945 through an endowment from John Henry Russell in honor of his father, John Newton Russell, this prestigious award recognizes an individual whose character, leadership, and dedication have left a lasting impact on the insurance and financial services profession.

A champion of ethical marketing practices, John Newton Russell served as agency manager for Pacific Mutual, was president of NALU (now NAIFA) during World War I, and was one of the incorporators of The American College of Life Underwriters. His commitment to professionalism and service continues to inspire this award.

First presented in 1947, the John Newton Russell Memorial Award is regarded as the profession's highest honor. Each year, the selection committee recognizes an insurance or financial services professional whose career reflects exceptional integrity, leadership, professional achievement, and service to both the industry and the communities they serve.

Award Criteria

Nominees are evaluated on the qualities exemplified by John Newton Russell, including:

  • Outstanding personal character and integrity
  • Exemplary leadership within the profession
  • Meaningful contributions to the insurance and financial services industry
  • Dedicated service to clients, communities, and the profession
  • Unwavering commitment to the highest ethical standards

The standards for this award are exceptionally high, reflecting the distinguished legacy of its namesake and the accomplishments of its past recipients.

Looking Ahead

Nominations for the 2027 John Newton Russell Memorial Award are expected to open in March 2027. We encourage NAIFA members to begin thinking about the exceptional professionals in their communities who exemplify the values and legacy of John Newton Russell.

Robert M. Nelson, CLU, LUTCF, FSS

Nelson_Robert_wNelson entered the insurance business in 1973 and joined the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), then known as NALU, the same year. He served NAIFA in leadership positions on the local, state, and national levels and was NAIFA’s National President during the 2001-2002 association year. The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States occurred during the annual conference when Nelson was elected NAIFA President, and he provided steady and calm leadership while attendees were stranded far from home. Nelson’s credibility was increased by his Navy Intelligence career spanning 27 years, with four years of active duty service and 23 years in the Navy reserves. Nelson retired as a Navy Captain.

In 1993 Nelson chaired a national task force to reform sales illustrations. Over three years, he testified 13 times at regulatory meetings and in front of the U.S. Senate, resulting in all 50 states changing their laws and adopting the joint task force’s major recommendations, including improved consumer reporting.
