About NAIFA

The Society of FSP: A History of Education and Development

The Society of Financial Service Professionals was founded in 1928 as the Alumni Association of the American College of Life Underwriters by the initial class of 21 recipients of the Chartered Life Underwriter designation. The organization soon changed its name to the National Chapter – Chartered Life Underwriters and in 1940 became The American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters.

Over the years the alumni association evolved into a true professional society and in 1946 chartered as a nonprofit corporation. That same year, it hosted the first CLU Institute (later, the FSP Institute) and began publishing the precursor to the Journal of Financial Security Professionals, the premier scholarly publication in insurance and financial services.

Membership in the society expanded beyond CLUs to include financial professionals from a variety of practice specialties holding widely recognized financial service designations or degrees, including AEP®, CASL®, CEBS®,CFA®, CFP®, ChFC, CIMA®, CLF, CPA, CPCU®, CTFA, MBA, MS, MSFS, MSM, Enrolled Actuary, REBC®, RHU®, and RICP®. Members included insurance agents, financial advisors, attorneys, CPAs, actuaries, and others.

Reflecting the professional diversity of its membership, the organization in 1998 became the Society of Financial Service Professionals. Through the years it earned its reputation as the industry’s premier provider of quality education. In 2024, FSP completed its merger with NAIFA, bringing together two of the foremost associations of financial service professionals. The FSP brand, continuing as a NAIFA Community, remains distinguished as a professional development and educational leader.
